Unit interviewed 11 interviewees for full-time job vacancies.
7) Supplemental Recruitment Initiatives.
(a) Initiative: Participation in Job Fairs by Station Personnel Who Have Substantial Responsibility in
the Making of Hiring Decisions
1. On October 19, 2014, stations were represented by the Sales Manager and the Program Director at the
largest job fair in the area hosted by The Charleston Newspaper. Station personnel answered questions
about careers in the broadcast industry and opportunities at the employment unit. One media
consultant was hired from this job fair.
2. On April 22, 2015, stations were represented by the Sales Manager at the Goodwill/Veterans Job Fair.
Station personnel answered questions about careers in the broadcast industry and opportunities at the
employment unit.
(b) Initiative: Participation in Events/Programs Sponsored by Educational Institutions Relating to
Career Opportunities in Broadcasting
1. On September 4, 2014, stations were represented by the Sales Manager and the Sports Director at West
Virginia State University’s job fair targeting school year students for internships. Station personnel
answered questions about careers in the broadcast industry and opportunities at the employment unit.
2. On April 16, 2015, stations were represented by the General Manager, the Sales Manager and the
Program Director at West Virginia State University’s job fair designed to help graduates find
opportunities. Station personnel answered questions about careers in the broadcast industry and
opportunities at the employment unit.
(c) Initiative: Internship
The employment unit participates in an ongoing internship program. LM Communication’s Charleston,
WV cluster is hosting an intern from West Virginia State University for the spring/summer semester. The
internship is for course credit. Responsibilities include, but are not be limited to: social media posts,
helping with remote broadcasts, filing, screening calls, photo editing, video editing, aiding the sales
department, and learning how to operate a control board. The intern works directly with the Interactive
Specialist, Administrative Assistant, Traffic and Continuity Director, Sports Director, and all Station
Program Directors.
(e) Initiative: Mentoring program
All employment unit departments are responsible for maintaining a mentoring program for station
personnel that help personnel acquire skills that could qualify them for higher-level positions. Department
efforts are reviewed quarterly by management. Two examples of mentoring during the reporting period
include:
1. Production of the Dave Miller Show: It was discovered in an annual 1:1 employee review that a parttime
board operator has a passion for sports broadcasting. As a result, three Program Directors took on
a mentoring initiative to guide him through the process of becoming a full-time Sport Director and
creating his own program “The Dave Miller Show.” The Sports Director responsibilities include board
operation, oversight of all WVU sports programming/events across the station group and the anchor of
a hyper-local sports talk program. This program launched in July 2014, once a week Saturday 12n-1p,
anchored by the Sports Director and part time DJ. The program received the Award for Excellence
from the WVBA for Best Talk Show in a ranked market, March 2015.
Stations WSCW(AM), WMON(AM), WMXE(FM), WWQB(FM), WJYP(AM), and WKLC-FM
are Equal Opportunity Employers.
2. Mentoring Part-time Employees: The employment unit recognizes that part-time positions are needed
in the industry and sets out to reverse the high turn-over rate by mentoring part-time employees. For
example, in May 2014 the employment unit hired a part-time high school student with a huge passion
for the legacy of the rock station. The employment unit designed a mentorship initiative led by a
Program Director on the FM side and Anchor to WVU sports. As a result, the part-time employee
excelled in all areas and took on more hours.
(f) Initiative: Training Program
The employment unit maintains a training program for station personnel to acquire skills that could qualify
them for higher-level positions. Cross training between traffic department, sales support, and accounts
receivable initiated summer 2014 to prepare for long term absence and to boost the skill level of individuals
for promotion or employment within the industry. The employment unit Program Directors, Sales Manager,
General Manager, Traffic Director, Production Director, and Receptionist were all are involved in crosstraining
activities during this reporting period.
